Polster Wins Thriller at Thunderhill!
By Greg Aregoni

June 4, 2005; Sturgeon Bay, WI. - Not even Thunderstorms could stop the roar of the engines from The Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway. After a one-hour rain delay, racing resumed as scheduled on The Northland Steel Company Night. “We would like to thank all of the fans for sticking through the rain delay. We wanted so bad to be able to race for the fans at the track. I also would like to thank the drivers for making the trip even though it was raining.” Bryan Wodack, promoter.

In Budweiser IMCA Modified action, Jay Matthias one his first feature of the season. In the Wulf Brother’s IMCA Stockcar class, Matt Junio won his second feature of the year. Edward Anschutz Jr. won his second feature in three weeks in the Mays Sport Center IMCA Hobbystock class. Todd Polster had a thrilling win in the Dairy Queen Street Stock class. Tyler Smith won his first Door County Motorsports 4-cylinder feature of the year.

Darrell Massart took the early lead on Scott Derenne on lap 4 and got to a four-car length lead. Jay Matthias made his way to the front by making a three-wide pass on James Tebon and Scott Derenne. Matthias then caught Massart, and made an inside pass on the front stretch; with Matthias inside and Massart outside they where able to break away from the rest of the field. Matthias found more momentum on the bottom, and flew away from the rest of the field. At the checkered flag, Massart, Dan Rataczjak, and Jeremy Jacobs followed Matthias. “I want to thank Bill Vanlieshout for setting up my car. He really does a great job. I had a good battle with Massart, which was pretty intense.” Matthias’s reaction to his first feature win of the season.

Mike Wietor and Don Aregoni battled for the early lead in the Wulf Brother’s IMCA Stockcar event until Matt Junio made his move on lap 5 and took the lead. Junio set sail and jumped to a commanding lead. Shawn Kilgore and Craig Paque made their ways to the front using the inside line of the track. After a caution on lap 9, Junio again jumped to the lead. Kilgore was able to stay with him using the high side of the track. Junio started to pull away with five laps to go and never looked back. Junio went on to win his second feature win of the season; he was ahead of Shawn Kilgore, Craig Paque, and Jeff Vlies at the line. “I would like to dedicate this win to my mother-in-law; she has been cancer free for 20 years today.” Matt Junio when asked about his win.

Roger Laviolette led the opening three laps of the Mays Sport Center IMCA Hobby Stock event, until Eddie Anschutz made his move using the high line on the race track. Anschutz led lap four, only to have Laviolette come back and lead lap five. Anschutz then found real good bite on the extreme high line, and took the lead for good. The battle for third and fourth was between Keith Kickbusch and Tony Schlei. With five laps to go both Kickbusch and Schlei got around Laviolette on the low side. Neither driver was able to challenge Anschutz as he went on to win his second feature of the season. Trailing Anschutz at the finish were Kickbusch, Schlei, and Laviolette. Eddie Anschutz had this to say about his win, “I would like to thank all of my family and friends that have helped me through out the years. Without them I would never have been able to race.”

Todd Polster used a first lap four-wide pass to take the lead in the Dairy Queen Street Stock A main event. Jeremy Wiitala followed Polster to the front and they engaged in a two-car battle. John Sternard was solidly in third until Mike Pierrard and Scott Reinhardt tracked him down. Pierrard and Reinhardt used the outside line to make the pass on Sternard. Polster and Wiitala got away from the rest of the field, and decided to settle the lead between the two of them. With two laps to go Wiitala shot to the middle groove of the racetrack. With Polster up high, Wiitala found a little more momentum, and lead lap fourteen as they took the white flag. Going down the backstretch, Polster got a little higher and found momentum. Coming around turn 4, Polster found just a little bit more bite and crossed the line first in front of Wiitala. Mike Pierrard and Scott Reinhardt finished third and fourth. “This race was especially fun, because I was racing against Jeremy; he is a very clean racer. We never touched once as we went for the lead. We race each other very clean.” Todd Polster’s reaction when asked what he thought about racing against Jeremy Wiitala.

Tyler Smith grabbed the lead on the second lap of the Door County Motorsports 4-cylinder feature and never looked back. Kenny Malcore and Tom Zastrow were second and third, but could never catch Tyler Smith. Smith went on to get his first win of the season. “After having a bad race last night, it was good to win tonight. I want to thank Junio racing for all of their help”
