Matthias Poured It On to Take Budweiser Mod Feature Win!
By Dan Lewis

July 3, 2004; Sturgeon Bay, WI. - Near perfect but overcast weather conditions and accurate calculations on track preparation gave Thunderhill Raceway drivers a perfect track on Saturday night. With rain forecast throughout
the day and evening, track officials put it all together for a great show for the fans for the fifth night straight. In the Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Jay Matthias of Luxemburg poured it on with only four laps to go to take home his
first 20-lap feature win of the season. Charlie Kroll won his first T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock Car feature of the year. May’s Sports Center IMCA Hobby Stock feature winner Tom Brumlic took home his third feature trophy. AmericInn
Street Stock Jeremy Wiitala won his second main and Sport Four Ken Malcore snatched his fourth feature in the past five weeks. Budweiser- Flanigan Distributing was the night’s sponsor and provided a massive pre-race parade of their
local sponsored drivers.

After some bad luck in early season races,
2003 champion Ken Malcore now has four feature wins in the past five weeks of
racing. “Bud girl” Renee LeMieux helped him share the victory.

In the Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Algoma’s Jeremy Jacobs took over the track championship points lead after finishing third in the main event. An opening lap mishap took a normally-consistent competitors Benji LaCrosse and Mike Cole. Other point leaders including Dan Ratajczak and Jared Siefert suffered problems in the main as well. But it was Jay Matthias’ night in the spotlight as he won the 20-lap main. Matthias started from the fourth row, and worked his way up to fourth place in the early going. Early race leader Kevin Sternard looked good in the opening laps but fell victim to Chris Derenne by the eighth circuit. Derenne led much of the race while Sean Jerovetz , Jay Matthias and
Jeremy Jacobs battled it out for second and third. Jerovetz made his way to the front to take the lead twice from Derenne, but it was Matthias taking the outline line around Jerovetz for the win. At the checkers, it was Matthias and
Jerovetz, followed by Jacobs, Sternard and veteran George Henkel. Heat winners were Matthias, Billy LeMieux and Darrell Massart.

T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock Car Don Aregoni wrestled the lead away from front row starter Shawn Havel on lap two of the 18-lap feature event and looked strong. Defending points champ Shawn Kilgore challenged Aregoni for the number
one spot, taking the lead away on the sixth go-round. Kilgore snagged the lower groove and led the most laps through mid-race, but it was the hard charging Charlie Kroll of Algoma that hooked up on the high groove to pass Kilgore with
only four laps remaining in the contest. Kroll took home his first 2004 feature win at the “Hill” with Kilgore having to settle for the runner-up spot. Third went to Matt Junio, who came all the way up from a seventh row starting spot. Aregoni and Tracy Koontz rounded out the top-five. B.J. Soquet won the consi event for the Stocks. Earlier heat winners were Kroll, Aregoni, and Tony Bouche.

In the May’s Sports Center IMCA Hobby Stock feature event, Denmark’s Tom Brumlic went on to win his third feature of the season with points leader Ed Anschutz in tow. Carl Laughlin had grabbed the early lead from his front row start. Brumlic snatched the lead on the third lap and never looked back. Anschutz was able to take the second place spot behind Brumlic early but there was took much track to catch and passs the race leader. At the finish, it was Brumlic and Anschutz crossing the line followed by Laughlin, Wayne Moore and Keith Kickbusch. Dave DeGrave and Brumlic won earlier heat events.

AmericInn Street Stock Jeremy Wiitala, of Green Bay, celebrated his second feature win of the season on Saturday night. Wiitala skillfully mastered the outside groove and moved his way to the front and catch race leader Todd Polster. Polster led all but the final two laps of the event when Wiitala claimed the number one spot. Polster spun on the final lap and the other race leaders were forced to scramble for final position. Polster pulled out of the spin in time to finish sixth. Faron Beilke finished second to Wiitala, followed by Mike King Jr., Scott Reinhardt and Mike Pierrard. Earlier heat winners were Polster, Darren Otto, and King.

In the Sport 4 division, Algoma’s Ken Malcore won his third feature in a row, leading every lap of the 10-lap race. Malcore also won the heat race.

Budweiser IMCA Modified, T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock Car, May’s Sports Center IMCA Hobby Stock, AmericInn Street Stock divisions along with the Sport-4 class compete weekly on Saturday nights, with competition getting underway at 6
p.m.
