Thunder Hill Raceway Washed Out!
By Joe Verdegan
June 28, 2003; Sturgeon Bay, WI. -
Steady showers throughout the course of the day forced officials to cancel the scheduled
race program Saturday night at the Thunderhill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay.
A cold rain moved into the area about mid-morning, and persisted through the afternoon.
It was the first complete cancellation of the year at the Raceway, and the second
points night to fall victim to rain.
The race would have been the beginning to the second half of the season. At the
midpoint, IMCA modified points leader and three-time champion Todd Dart of Algoma will
have to wait another week to try for his third straight feature win. Dart holds a 27
point edge on second year driver Jay Matthias, with hopes of a record tying four title up
for grabs. Eugene Gregorich ran off four straight crowns between 1994 and 1997.
In the IMCA stock cars, two-time defending champ Craig Paque of Algoma is 12 markers in
front of Kewaunee's Shawn Kilgore in what is developing into a two man battle. Green
Bay's Troy Muench has used four feature wins to spring to an 11 point lead over James
Tebon of Algoma. Leading the inaugural season of the IMCA hobby stocks is Joe Hegnet
of Sturgeon Bay. His lead is a slim one; just three points in front of Tony
Schlei, who makes the long tow from Zion, IL each week. Algoma's Ed Anschutz is just
six back. Local favorites Ken Malcore and Bob Skippon are tied for the 4 cylinder
lead.
Next Saturday night, July 3rd, Budweiser and Flanigan Distributing will now team up with
the Sturgeon Bay Dairy Queen to host the show. A full program featuring IMCA
modifieds, IMCA stock cars, street stocks, IMCA hobby stocks and 4 cylinders will be in
action, beginning at 6 p.m. For more information call 920 743 7052. The track
