(Sturgeon Bay, WI) August 1- What started as a night of talking over a few beers landed Tyler Hackett in the winners circle in the IMCA Modifieds on Floors by Josh, Bissen Asphalt, LaVines Ice night at Prestige Yacht Coatings Thunderhill Raceway. Other feature winners were Bret Koehler (IMCA Stock Car), Todd Wiese (IMCA Sport Mod), Travis Hackett (IMCA Hobby Stock), Todd Polster (Street Stock) and Joey Scoon (Four-Cylinders)
A conversation at the Bull Pen Bar & Grill with Dave Bouche and Sport Mod driver at that time Tyler Hackett, lead to Hackett racing the Luxemburg Special as a Modified. After that night Hackett switched over to the IMCA Modifieds and found victory in only his second week in the division.
Although Hackett lead every lap of the feature it was no easy task as point leader James Tebon was the first to take a shot at the Rookie. Next up it was 6-Time Mod Champion Felix Dart working to the runner up spot with Tebon being shuffled to fourth. With 5 to go 2-Time Mod Champion Jay Matthias began to battle Dart for the runner up position as they gave chase at Hackett. The duo gave it all they had but when the checker fell it was Hackett scoring the upset. Dart came home second, Matthias Second, Tebon fourth and Kyle Fredrick rounded out the top five with his first trip to the track this season.
Bret Koehler finally shook off his bad luck taking home his first ever IMCA Stock Car feature win.
Luke Lemmens paced the opening lap with Koehler charging from the outside to the point a lap later. A series of cautions kept the field tight to Koehler’s tail piece as the laps slowly clicked away. With the majority of the field running down low, title contender Jeremy Wiitala took his machine up top and began to move through the field. Point leader Troy Muench worked his way through the field into the top 5 with 8 laps remaining. Both Wiitala and Muench worked to second and third from starting in row 7. They gave chase to Koehler but came up short with Koehler in the primer 65 scoring his first Stock Car main. Muench charged to second, Wiitala scored third, Rick Dix fourth and Lemmens settled for fifth. Koehler scored a clean sweep also winning his heat race earlier in the night.
In the IMCA Sport Mods Todd Wiese made his second trip to Thunderhill a successful one taking home his first feature in the division.
Wiese worked from his pole position to a huge lead, leaving the battle for second. Kelsy Hayes was the first to work through traffic setting her sights on Wiese and slowly began to close in on what looked like a impossible task. Point leader Jarred VanLaanen worked from row 5 to third and joined Hayes on the way to Wiese’s back bumper. Just as the battle for the lead was about to heat up the caution flew, setting up a 4 lap dash to the checker. Second place points runner Randy LeMieux Jr., was already on his second car of the night after his machine lost power in the heat. He borrowed Ryan LeMieux’s car but his night ended under the caution, heading to the pits with a huge trail of rear end grease following him. On the restart Wiese was able to hold off VanLannen scoring his first ever IMCA feature. VanLaanen padded his point lead with a second place, Steve Georgenson made a trip down pit lane before the first lap and rallied to third, Hayes had to settle for fourth with Josh Massart took home fifth. Wiese scored a clean sweep also winning his heat race earlier in the night.
Travis Hackett, Tyler’s younger brother also scored a feature win, his second of the season in the IMCA Hobby Stocks.
Hackett worked by Eric Micolichek on lap 2 and distanced himself from the field. Last weeks winner Derek Moede raced to second midway through the contest and mounted a charge at Hackett. Hackett had suffered a slue of mechanical issues this season but he over came them tonight holding off Moede to the checkers, scoring his second main of the season, Moede placed second staying in the title hunt, third went to former champion Joe Hegnet who pitted midway through the contest with a flat tire, point leader Tom Brumlic came home fourth and Sawyer Haese rounded out the top five.
Todd Polster returned to victory lane with his 4th feature win of the season in the Street Stocks.
Mike Sargent paced the first 2 laps before former champ Geno Sternard raced by to the lead. A caution on lap 5 involved second place points man Jimmy Anderson, sending him to the pits with a busted steering box. Todd Polster who started last because of carburetor issues and former champion Aaron Thornton worked through the field and it looked to be a 3 car battle for the lead, but mechanical issues sent Thornton to the pits 2 laps later. Polster worked the low groove past Sternard with 5 laps to go. Sternard stayed on Polster’s rear spoiler but wasn’t ever able to retake the lead and Polster scored the fan popular win. Sternard took home a strong second, Marvin Denny crossed the line third, Sargent fourth after a trip down pit lane and Ed Franklin had another solid run placing fifth. Polster then gave his race winning trophy away to a lucky race fan.
After post race tech, Denny was disqualified for what the rep called an illegal part, bumping the rest of the field up one position. This moved point leader Dennis Weidner to fifth in the finishing order. Weidner had a hard crash in his heat race and again had to use his backup car and still managed to pad his point lead over Anderson.
Joey Scoon won his second feature of the season the Feisty Fours.
The track is off this Saturday Aug 4.
