(Sturgeon Bay, WI) May 23, 2013- Thunderhill Raceway gears up for night number two with the 5th Annual Nathan Bouche Memorial this Saturday night May 25. With 141 Speedway off and Shawano Speedway not sanctioning for the Mods, this leaves Thunderhill as the only track in the state where drivers in the IMCA Modifieds can earn sanctioned points. “With the weather playing havoc in recent weeks this will offer Wisconsin drivers chasing State, Regional and National points an extra night.” Stated track promoter Woody Wodack.

The Bouche racing shop has always helped those with the will to race. The NB-27 memorial will award the Sportsman trophy to someone who defines what racing and family are all about. The traveling trophy has been awarded to Nathan’s father IMCA Stock Car driver Tony Bouche, Billy Hayes, Edward Anschutz and Darrell Massart. AARON “THE HAMMER” THORNTON TAKES ON NEW ROLE AT THUNDERHILL

By Edward Anschutz
Editorial Contributor Mike Kelsey

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) March 23, 2013- One of Thunderhill Raceway’s most decorated racers looks to enter new role as car owner. Aaron “The Hammer” Thornton looks to help an old time racer cross a wish off his bucket list. With his very busy seasonal business Seal-Tec Seal Coating, Thornton’s time in the shop has been limited over the years and last season he only raced a few times. At 69 years young “Wild” Bill Krueger has seen it and just about done it all in racing. He and his wife Mary are now retired and living in Sturgeon Bay. Kruger is a published author and was a paid crew member on an open wheel Indy Car team in the late 1960’s. Kruger will add another chapter to his storied career driving for Thornton in 2013.

“Wild” Bill’s first race came to be at Jefferson Speedway when a friend bet him he was to scared too strap in the car and race it. This took place in 1960 barely 18 years old Krueger, had to duck track officials as he wasn’t old enough to race! He ended up an impressive ninth out of 23 cars driving a 1949 Buick 4 door Sedan that featured a straight 8 engine. Krueger has wins on the dirt capturing a feature win at Chilton in the Sportsman division which paid a grand total of two dollars and a case of beer. He’s raced in several different states, numerous tracks that include Indianapolis Raceway Park, Elkhart Lake, Hales Corners, Slinger Super Speedway and the Milwaukee Mile. Next on the list, Thunderhill Raceway.

If you’ve been racing for a long time you’re considered a veteran. This makes Thornton’s race car a veteran and then some. “The car started out racing an Enduro Series then progressed into a early 90’s IMCA Stock Car finally finding its home as a Street Stock a few years later.” “I bought it from local racer Troy Muench in 1999 and won the 2004 Street Stock title at Thunderhill.” “This will be the 26th season on the car.” In fact Thornton has never finished outside the top three in points in all the years he ran full time with that car.

Thornton has competed the Bomber, Street Stock, IMCA Stock Car and IMCA Modified divisions, finding victory lane in all of them. He holds two track championships at Thunderhill and a Street Stock title at Luxemburg Speedway. When you see the black and gold #95 remember “Wild” Bill is behind the wheel. As for Thornton’s racing future; “As the years go by I’ve raced less and less, it maybe time for me to hang up my drivers suit, time will tell.” “For now I’m looking forward to helping Krueger drive that old tank of mine.”

THUNDERHILL RACEWAY OPENER WASHED OUT FOR MAY 11

By Edward Anschutz

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) May 11, 2013- Mother-Nature has once again caused another track in N.E. Wisconsin to cancel a night of racing. Thunderhill Raceway is forced cancel due to heavy rains, pits being flooded & just plain ole nasty weather…oh and its snowing. We are set to attempt another go at it next Saturday, May 18 for Dave Hatch Racing, WDOR and Maas Floral night.

Talked to Woody and staff members that have been at the track since 7am trying to see what they could do to and make things a go. In preparation for the bad weather the track was worked until the early morning , unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate at all.

Woody stated, “Even if the pits weren’t flooded the condition of the racing surface likely would’ve been sketchy, unless you have mud and snow tires.” “We need warm weather and sun shine, cross your fingers for next weekend!”

By Edward Anschutz
Editorial contributor Mike Kelsey

(Sturgeon Bay, WI)  May 5, 2013- With the May 11 season opener less than a week away the IMCA Modifieds will be chasing added cash to win the feature at Thunderhill Raceway. A great supporter of the track offered to kick in some extra cash, bringing first place pay to a guaranteed $650. In addition a hard charger bonus of $50 will be added to the driver who passes the most cars in the feature

Thunderhill’s Modified class has fluctuated through recent years and there has be a lot of trash talking that anyone can win at the track known as the “Circle of Death” due its unique design. Its time to put up or shut up come opening night. We’re calling out the best in the IMCA Modified division to come and try to beat our hard working blue color locals. If you can do so, you’ll be walking away with a pocket full of cash….If not, it’ll once again prove our regulars are some of the best in the business.

Normally these type of added cash races come at end of the year specials at the expense of the drivers who pay large pit gate fees. Thunderhill is set to change all that offering a one time $50 membership fee, you basically get in FREE for all regular point nights. With our opener coming on May 11 it’ll offer drivers a fresh start to chase a championship if they’ve been off to a rough start at other tracks. Pits spots are still available.

THUNDERHILL RACEWAY & DOOR CANCER TEAM UP TO HELP THOSE FIGHTING CANCER

By Edward Anschutz
Editorial contributor Mike Kelsey

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) May 6, 2013- In this day and age its hard to find someone who hasn’t had cancer touch their life. So many have fought and beat this disease, far too many times we have sadly lost loved ones. A fight with cancer is a tall enough task even with the best doctors in the world. The cost of medical bills alone can be staggering. Add in the loss of an income because they aren’t able to work, all of this can be to overwhelming for any family. This is where Thunderhill Raceway and DOOR CANcer come together.

Our goal in working with DOOR CAN is to help those who are currently courageously battling cancer.
This will be achieved in several ways which include but are not limited to apparel sales, donations and a 50/50 raffle. We already have drivers who are willing to donate their payout after a night of racing. Several racers have come up with special paint jobs on their race cars to support the cause at Thunderhill as well as pay respects to those who have passed away. Most drivers these days barely have enough cash to fill up their hauler to get back home. This truly shows the character of drivers, crews, sponsors and staff we have at Thunderhill Raceway.

A special committee separate from the race track will be in charge of all the money raised. Working with DOOR CANcer means we can directly work with local family’s in their time of need. For more information about DOOR CANcer please visit their website at www.doorcancer.com

Thunderhill Raceway moves opening night to May 11 / Practice on May 4

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) April 29, 2013- Thunderhill Raceway staff members have decided to push opening night to Saturday May 11 due to weather and track conditions. Its been a fine line mastering mother nature. One way or another we plan to get cars on the track before our new opening night.

Practice will now take place on Saturday May 4 at 2pm till ?? We realize everyone is amped up and ready for the season to start but we will always be cautious when it comes to drivers and the track. REALITY TV PROMOTER MEETS WITH KELSY HAYES & THUNDERHILL RACEWAY STAFF

By Edward Anschutz
Editorial contributor Mike Kelsey

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) April 7, 2013 – A few months back Sturgeon Bay’s Bill Hayes was approached by the makers of Great Lake Warriors which is a reality show that airs on the History Channel. They wanted to know if Hayes daughter, Kelsy was interested in a racing themed show, of which showcased what it’s like to be a female racer in a predominantly male sport and all the that goes into becoming and taking on the top guns in the IMCA Sport Mod division.

On Friday April 5 the tv producer/promoter met with Hayes, track promoter Woody Wodack and Thunderhill Raceway announcer Edward Anschutz to interview and get comfortable with inner the workings of Thunderhill Raceway. Footage was shot in the shop where Hayes’s IMCA Sport Mod is being readied for the 2013 season. As of right now more footage is slated to shoot the first two nights of racing.

Many know Bill for his recycling business, Metal’s America located in Door County. Bill is no stranger to dirt track racing. He’s raced everything from a Street Stock to a Modified. A few years ago his daughter Kelsy followed in his foot steps wanting to get behind the wheel. She began her career in the Hobby Stock division before moving to the highly competitive Sport Mods where she won two features in 2012 and finished third in the standings just a handful of points from winning the championship.

“We have a great dynamic here at Thunderhill, the fact footage will be shot at the track is great for everyone who supports our Saturday night shows” stated Woody. Many details are currently being discussed and we will have more information in coming weeks.

Thunderhill Raceway features arguably one of the nicest dirt track faculties in Wisconsin. On track Musco Lighting that makes it look like daytime when night falls. Hard packed pit area makes it easy if you need to work on your race car. The track is also level with the pit area making it very easily visible from the pits making it easy to keep up on track conditions. It also allows you to enjoy a night of racing as if you were in the stands. The PA system is second to none encased in an easy accessible covered grandstand that offers back rest and plenty of leg room. The track is a uniquely shaped 1/3 mile clay base with very little banking, it’s a true drivers track that is affectionately known as the “Circle of Death.”
