By Edward Anschutz

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) August 15, 2013- Thunderhill Raceway heads into the weekend with only 3 nights remaining. The pressure is on the point leaders to keep their top spot while drivers 2nd on back are breathing down their neck. This Saturday, August 17 will be brought to you by Witt Peninsula Ford. During intermission the annual Kids Big Wheel race will take place. Witt Ford is also be giving away a remote control car.

Eagles Inside Groove…

Action has been hot and heavy. Those who were around last Saturday definitely got their moneys worth in the Stock Car feature. Rivalries are a part of racing and its possible another one was born. The feature video courtesy of Pain Racing was one of the most shared races of the season. Being a track official can be a thankless job. Most cases it doesn’t matter what choices are made, someone will be mad. The NFL has instant replay and still cant get calls correct. In racing its 1000 times as harder. With race cars reaching 60-70mph things happen quicker than a blink of an eye. Its easy for fans to point out things when they sit and watch 1 or 2 drivers then entire race. Try to watch ALL the cars for 18 laps. The Promoter and Flagman are the ones who take the most heat, when in fact the Promoter makes zero track calls and the flagman takes heat for well just about anything and everything. Make sure keep an open thought process when a call is made, 99% of the time of the officials see a lot more than you do.

While were on that note, remember the scores or the announcer don’t make any track calls. We just relay the message. So yelling at them does nothing.

Dan Ratajczak who was challenging for his first IMCA Modified title was involved in a 4-wheeler mishap, which resulted with a trip to the hospital with several broke bones. Everyone at the Hill wishes Dan a full and speedy recovery. Ratajczak still leads the class with 3 feature wins.

Speaking of Modifieds James Lee Tebon earned his first feature win of the year. The defending champ has the title wrapped up with a 37 point lead. It also appears Greg Gretz has the Rookie of The Year honors locked up.

In IMCA Stock Car action it was Dave Bouche scoring his 2nd feature win of the season. Bouche is also your defending champ and holds a 13 point edge over Shawn Havel. Havel leads the division with 3 feature wins. With all the action that took place in last weeks feature the battle for the title took a back seat. I suspect some of that same thought process will take place Saturday if the fire fly again.

A shake up in the IMCA Sport Mod standings took place when defending champion Bernie Reinhardt suffered a flat and went laps down. Randy LeMieux Jr. was there to capitalized taking the point lead for the first time this season. He holds a 7 point edge over Reinhardt.

Scott Boulanger has been the man to beat in the IMCA Hobby Stocks as he picked up his 6th feature win. Even with those wins he still sits second in the standings 1 mere point behind Derek Moede. Moede also has a tight points battle at Luxemburg where he his co-point leader. Both drivers are looking for their first track title. 2003 Hobby champ Joe Hegnet has been a model of consistency and is still in the title hunt sitting 9 back of Moede.

Keith Kickbusch leads the Street Stock points with a 17 point lead over Kevin Leudtke. Kickbusch holds 2 track titles at the Hill in the Hobby Stocks. He also is the current leader at Luxemburg.

Five divisions do battle every Saturday night through the summer. IMCA Modified, IMCA Stock Car, IMCA Northern Sport Mod, IMCA Hobby Stock and Street Stocks will compete on the 1/3rd mile clay oval. For more information, please visit the track’s website at www.racethunderhill.com.

Quietwoods RV has been gracious enough to donate 4 campers that will be destroyed after the final feature of the night. One of the objects that will meet its demise is a 26’ 2012 camper. “Many people have asked why a new camper? The answer is all about the awe factor and entertainment for our fans!” Stated track promoter Woody Wodack.

We still have spots open on the grid for the trailer race if you wish to compete please contact Woody. Also please make note of vehicle, name and number at the back gate so they announcer knows who you are!

Eagles Inside Groove…

Rookies have taken a strong hold all over local short tracks in North Eastern Wisconsin. The Kelsey Racing IMCA Modifieds are proof of that. Kewaunee’s Greg Gretz has won 2 feature in a row plus 4 heat races. Gretz is the rookie leader despite a late start to the season.

Luxemburg’s Jacob Zellner joined the local rookie young guns by scoring he first ever LaVine’s Ice IMCA Sport Mod feature at The Hill. Zellner is a former national cart champion. Check out the latest edition of Full Throttle Magazine to learn more about our local young guns driving into victory lane at your race track.

Speaking of “outsiders” again our “locals” Luxemburg’s Jared Siefert won the first $800 Mod show on opening night. Sturgeon Bay’s Bernie Reinhardt also took home over $1,000 in the IMCA Sport Mods just a couple weeks ago. Pulaski’s “Hot” Rod Snellenberger netted $950 last week in his victory at the Hill during the Badger Stock Car tour.

With only 5 nights remaining point battles are heating up. The IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods and IMCA Hobby Stocks are single digits apart from first to second in the standings. To see who’s in the points battle check out the track website or pick up a free points sheet located several places at the track courtesy Dan & Mary Lewis.

Our racing family lost John this off season due to a battle with cancer. In his memory the IMCA Sport Mods will be in the spot light with driver introductions. Eagle’s Inside Groove…The Terry Simon Memorial has been rescheduled for next Saturday.

Jamie Suckocki broke a very long winless streak holding off the defending IMCA Stock Car champion Dave Bouche and former Stock Car champ Larry Karcz Jr. who won the title in 1999. Karcz is wheel a Wolfe Chassis formerly owned by Eric and Chris Malfoid. The current owner of the car is George Paul who also fields a car for Street Stock point leader Keith Kickbusch. Karcz is slated to run the Badger Stock Car Tour which makes its way to Thunderhill on Thursday July 18. A solid field of talent is expected for the Thursday Night Thunder event.

A unique feat took place in the IMCA Modified and IMCA Sport Mods where a father and son stood in victory when the night ended. Dan and Andy Ratajczak became members of a select list of father/son tandems that scored feature wins on the same night. Track Historian Tom Wagner keeps track of all those stats and I’ll be contacting him to get the complete list of all the families who have done as they did.

I encourage everyone to check the remaining schedule for Thunderhill as there is so much going on I cant fit it on one press release. There’s a little something for everyone, some come get your thrill at Thunderhill.

CALLING ALL DRIVERS…REALITY TV FOOTAGE TO BE SHOT THIS SATURDAY JUNE 29 AT THUNDERHILL RACEWAY / RIBEYE SANDWICHES / DRIVER AUTOGRAPHS

By Edward Anschutz
Editorial Contributor Mike Kelsey

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) June 25, 2013- Reality show footage is scheduled to be shot this Saturday June 29 at Thunderhill Raceway with racing kicking off at 6pm. In April a meeting was held with a television producer/promoter with the plan of trying to get a racing reality show off the ground that featured the dynamic of the girls vs. boys battling on the flat 1/3 mile clay oval. The second round of recording was set to take place at our opener but mother nature wiped that out. Weather permitting the long awaited footage will be shot this Saturday.

We’re doing an unofficial casting call for all female and male drivers. The ladies will be in the spotlight, so if you’re a female racer we want to see you this weekend. It only takes one look on Facebook after a night of racing to realize some of the guys don’t like racing with or being beat by girls or vice versa. Racing drama is better than any soap opera and for us to keep pursuing this reality show we need the real you. So if the camera ends up on you, be yourself . We want the good the bad and the ugly!

Eagles Inside Groove…This weekends racing will be brought to you by Marchants Meats and the delicious Ribeye Sandwiches will available at the concession stand all night. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

All about the Kids…Parents and children make sure to stop by the Dan Lewis Photography trailer and purchase a checker flag as we’ll be holding a Driver Autograph session for all the race fans. Dan, Mary and Mike Sr. always come prepared for race fans each and every night. For a few bucks you can have a great memory and souvenir for years to come.

As if the go-karts for the kids wasn’t enough the track is also offering bus rides around the track at intermission. The bus is able capable carrying 17 kids at a time. Other local race tracks have had great success with this and for us it allows the children who aren’t tall enough to drive the go-karts a chance to get on the race track.

The Terry Simon Memorial will be rescheduled. With 141 Speedway off this Saturday we are hoping for added fans and drivers for the cameras.

Five divisions do battle every Saturday night through the summer. IMCA Modified, IMCA Stock Car, IMCA Northern Sport Mod, IMCA Hobby Stock and Street Stocks will compete on the 1/3rd mile clay oval. Thunderhill Speedway is cancelled for tonight June 22

By Edward Anschutz

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) June 22, 2013 Press Release- How’s the song go? Second verse, same as the first! Thunderhill Raceway pulls the pin for action tonight. With heavy rains which forced Luxemburg Speedway to cancel last night, Thunderhill has suffered the same fate and is following suit by doing so. Maybe we need to change the name of the track to remove the “Thunder” part?

I spoke directly with the track workers who have spent the last 4 hours trying to just get a single racing groove packed with no such luck. The track had standing water in several places which would’ve lead to a rough racing surface and tore up race cars. Last week we pushed the boundaries of what the track could take and everyone suffered. We definitely weren’t going to make the same mistake again.

Joe Verdegan has a great column in the Full Throttle racing magazine dealing with the business side of race tracks when working with rain outs and bad weather. Make sure to check it out.

Terry Simon Memorial This Saturday June 22 at Thunderhill Free Popcorn Night & Mod Intros

By Edward Anschutz

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) June 20, 2013 Press Release- The 2nd Annual Terry Simon Memorial will kick off night No. 5 at Thunderhill Raceway this Saturday night June 22. Race fans will be treated to free Pop Corn with a paid wristband. The Kelsey Racing IMCA Modifieds will be in the spotlight and will feature driver introductions before their feature.

Eagles Inside Groove…Not much has changed with Mother Nature claiming the features last Saturday. The biggest thing we need at the Hill is warm sunny weather. We are just above the .500 mark when it comes to battling water falling from the sky. I don’t like say that “R” word, its bad luck!

The Egg Harbor Fun Park go-karts have quickly become a hit with race fans. For the foreseeable future we will have kids that are 4’ and taller get an extra ticket at the ticket booth AFTER the nightly events have started. We will draw 3 tickets before the final heat race of the night and those kids will be able to race their favorite driver. If your child wins please make sure to come up to the announcers tower and let me know who your favorite racer is and we will do our best to get them on the go-kart track for your race at intermission.

So far 12 drivers have tasted feature wins, they include Jared Siefert and Dan Ratajczak in the IMCA Modifieds. IMCA Stock Cars drivers Shawn Havel, Luke Lemmens and Bret Koehler. Jarred VanLaanen, Chris Budzban and Bernie Reinhardt in the IMCA Sport Mods, Scott Boulanger in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Von Eytcheson, Keith Kickbusch and Brandon Peterson in the Street Stocks.

When it comes to feature wins Scott Boulanger leads all divisions with 3 on the season. The IMCA Hobby Stock driver from Luxemburg is looking for his first career track championship. The Hobby’s have only ran 3 features so he sits perfect so far. The only other repeat feature win is Frog Station’s Dan Ratajczak in the IMCA Modifieds, he has 2 wins on the season.

As for heat race wins 31 drivers have earned a checkered flag 8 of those drivers hold more than one win. Derek Moede of Casco leads all classes with 3 heat race wins in his IMCA Hobby Stock.

10 heat races have been completed in the IMCA Stock Cars with 9 different winners. The only repeat winner is Algoma’s Tony Bouche is his Ford powered machine.

Thunderhill Raceway pink ribbon decals can be purchased in the Dan Lewis Photography and Souvenir trailer located behind the grandstand. 100% of the proceeds go into our Door Cancer account to help local families battling cancer.

$1 COORS LIGHT NIGHT AT THUNDERHILL RACEWAY / SPECTATOR ELIMINATOR 6-15-13

By Edward Anschutz
Editorial Contributor Mike Kelsey

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) June 12, 2013- Week 4 preview at Thunderhill Raceway which features $1 Coors Light the entire night with a paid admission this Saturday June 15. We are looking for our first entries for the Spectator Eliminator. Rules are very simple…must have helmet, paid pit pass, street-able vehicle no “race cars“, 18yrs or older. Driver doesn’t need valid drivers licenses but must have ID. You race after the final feature of the night. The winner gets a nice trophy for victory! Great chance to get out on the “Circle of Death” and get your adrenaline fix without all the expenses of a race car.

Egg Harbor Fun Park has been gracious enough to lend Thunderhill a few Go-Karts and the plan is to choose 3 kids names, let those kids choose their favorite racer and let them race on the Go-Kart track at intermission. “Were currently working out all the details for ages that will be eligible to race. More importantly our goal is to give the kids a memory of a lifetime in racing their dirt track hero.” stated Woody. We’ve also thought about having race fans pay a small fee to race their favorite driver at the end of the night and all money raised to will go to our DOOR CANcer account and will be used to help local families fighting Cancer.

Eagles Inside Track…

The Stock Cars saw the return of Shawn Olson. Olson raced the #52 machine of Troy Muench. At Luxemburg Speedway Muench debut his brand new Petrie Chassis IMCA Stock Car which features the John Soukup #99. Muench as well as many others have changed their car number to the 99 in memory of Soukup who lost his battle with cancer this off season. Olson is a sponsor on both Muench’s race cars which resulted in some extra seat time for the former Street Stock champ

In the Kelsey Racing IMCA Modifieds Dan Ratajczak picked up his second feature win in a row. James Tebon leads the standings by 6 points over Ratajczak. Billy LeMieux sit’s a bakers dozen behind Tebon. Greg Gretz Mods in only his second start in the Mods has already won a heat race. Gretz is the leading Rookie in the class.

Despite a hard wreck a couple weeks ago Bret Koehler found victory lane in the Bull Pen Bar IMCA Stock Cars. Dave Bouche hasn’t finished outside the top four in this early season which has vaulted him into the point lead. Opening night feature winner Shawn Havel sits second just 3 points back of Bouche. Jeremy Wiitala is third in points just 6 markers back, Luke Lemmens who has one feature to his credit sits fourth 7 points out, John Anschutz & Tom Brumlic tied are for fifth in the standings 9 points behind the leader. Last season the title came down to the final night of the season, this year looks to be the same.

Opening night feature winner Jarred VanLaanen holds the number one spot in the LaVine’s Ice IMCA Sport Mods. It’s a total free for all for the top spot with the top eight in points are only separated by 10 points. Every night for here on out will feel like the final point night for all the title contenders. Defending champ Bernie Reinhardt picked up the win last week and sits second on the standings, Randy LeMieux Jr. third, Josh Massart fourth, Chris Budzban and Dennis Miesler are tied for fifth, Kelsy Hayes seventh and Ryan LeMieux eighth.

Martin Kelsey’s bad luck in the Sport Mods has continued after running in the top five every night Martin has been caught up in late race wrecks, results haven’t matched his performance. In the Rookie battle Cody Rass holds a 3 point edge over Jacob Zellner. Rass sits tenth in the standings.

Despite being disqualified twice at Luxemburg Scott Boulanger has been perfect at Thunderhill in the Lackie Rentals IMCA Hobby Stocks with three feature wins in three nights. He leads last years runner up Derek Moede by 4 points. 2003 Hobby champ Joe Hegnet sits third 13 points out of the lead.

In the Showcase Kitchens Street Stocks Keith Kickbusch holds a slim 3 point edge over Kevin Luedtke. Last weeks winner Brandon Peterson suffered a DNF (did not finish) is back in the title hunt 10 points back. Jeremy Dubois runs fourth 11 markers behind the leader. Kickbusch and Peterson hold titles in the IMCA Hobby Stocks while Dubois holds one in the Feisty Fours. Luedtke is chasing his first title. Former Street Stock champ John Sternard was suspended for a week after having issues with Todd Wagner. This pushes Sternard out of the title contention while Wagner sits fifth.

EAGLES INSIDE GROOVE @ T-HILL WITH RACING THIS SATURDAY JUNE 8 $1 BUD NIGHT

By Edward Anschutz

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) June, 6 2013 Press Release- Last week Mother Nature may have got the best of us but its not putting a stop to the $1 Bud Light and Budweiser this Saturday night June 8 at Thunderhill Raceway. The buck beer will last all night with a paid wrist band. Northland Steel of Sturgeon Bay will bring the IMCA Hobby Stocks into the spotlight with driver introductions. The Bartenders Race will be rescheduled.

With no racing the point standings stay the same which allows me to let you know more of what’s happening at The Hill with something I like to call “Eagles Inside Groove”….

Former IMCA Stock Car champion Greg Gretz of Kewaunee made his debut in the Kelsey Racing IMCA Modifieds at Thunderhill two weeks ago . Gretz is a racing a Slick Chassis built by Russ Reinwald of Juneau. The chassis burst onto the scene scoring several feature wins last season. Years ago it was common place for local drivers to buy chassis  that were built out of state, namely Iowa. Now days local racers have started their own chassis shops with great success. James Lee Tebon of Algoma finished second in the standings in 2012 at Luxemburg Speedway by only 3 points and earned his first career IMCA Modified championship at Thunderhill with a Slick Chassis, he’s currently getting his new Slick machine dialed in.

Speaking of chassis builds in Wisconsin, Kewaunee’s Luke Lemmens broke into victory lane two weeks ago in the Bull Pen Bar & Grill IMCA Stock Cars wheeling a 2013 FAST Chassis. These race cars are built by defending IMCA Stock Car champ Dave Bouche of Algoma.

3rd Generation racer Daniel Sell of Suring made his first ever laps in the Lackie Rentals IMCA Hobby Stocks for the 5th Annual NB-27 night. The Weidner Family borrowed Daniel Sell one of their race cars allowing him to get his feet wet in the sport. Daniel Sell was running well until a mechanical failure ended his maiden voyage. The late JR Sell paved the way for his son Dan to race in the IMCA Stock Car ranks in the mid 90’s while working out of the Bouche Racing shop in Algoma. Dan jumped back into Nathan’s memorial car and won his heat and placed fifth in the feature. Sells have always ran under the Ford Motorsports blue oval banner.

Full Throttle racing magazine has made its return to our local dirt tracks due to the extensive work of Bert Lehman. Lehman could be consider the center of the racing universe covering stories from tracks, drivers and local touring series. A Thunderhill Raceway article will be forth coming. Not only do you receive exclusive stories in Full Throttle, the magazine is also FREE and can be picked up at the Dan Lewis Photography trailer.

Lehman also offers race fans a chance to own their favorite dirt drivers die cast car. He offers an endless display from the cars of yesteryear to 2013 Late Models. “Like” his page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/HighWideHandsomeCustomDieCasts
