STERNARD FAMILY, RACING FOR A CAUSE

By Edward Anschutz

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) June 27 – When you enter the race track each Saturday night at Prestige Yacht Coatings Thunderhill Raceway there’s one thing you can be sure of and that’s running into a Sternard. The Sternard family has been a fixture at the track dating back into the 60’s. The Sternard family members have played several different roles at the track from promoting to having championship drivers.

Beginning with 2011 racing season former Street Stock Champion, John Sternard found himself in a different role other than behind the wheel of his IMCA Stock Car. After suffering an injury that sidelined him, John found himself in the role of a car owner. “Doctors ordered I take it easy for at least a full year.” Said Sternard. So John went on the hunt to find a driver, enter Todd Polster former owner of Sternard’s current car. A deal was made and Polster would drive for Sternard at Thunderhill Raceway.

The car would wear the #76 which is synonymous with the Sternard family, when it came to paint and lettering John and the team went with a pink and purple design. “The pink and purple themed car was to honor not only my aunt Diane Sternard and Missy Delfosse who have both battled cancer, but to show our support for people who have or are fighting cancer.”

Sternard then teamed up with the American Cancer Society and sponsored a Relay Team for Life. Polster who owns Bleys Bar also jumped aboard to co-sponsor the relay team. “We take a portion of our winnings each night and donate it to the American Cancer Society.” John’s father Les Sternard who races Street Stocks also joined in and did a green colored scheme on his car. “The Street Stock I designed was to honor my brother Chuck who has battled and beat Lymphoma twice.”

The Sternard’s have been using racing as a tool to bring attention to their cause, bringing their cars to parades and doing special appearances to help raise awareness and donations. “We are challenging our fellow drivers to come aboard and help donate to the American Cancer Society.” “We are asking any fans that have been affected by cancer or know someone who has to come down after the races and sign the dash or rear firewall of my #76 IMCA Stock Car.”

As for getting back behind the wheel, “Doctors say my back is healing properly and I plan to do a few nights of racing later this year.” esthetically stated Sternard, “I do enjoy being a car owner, I’ve always admired former NASCAR team owner and crew chief Junior Johnson.”

If you are interested in helping Sternard donate to the American Cancer Society please contact him by email sternard02@hotmail.com, phone 920-495-6631 or just stop by after the races in Sturgeon Bay Saturday nights.

Thunderhill is located at the John Miles Fair Park on Sturgeon Bay’s east side with racing in the six divisions beginning every Saturday night through the summer. Extra incentives will be put on the line to commemorate the running of the 300th feature. The winner of the Stock Car feature will receive $300, as well as a special commemorative trophy. The 300th feature includes points and non points nights since the track reopened 19 years ago.

Oconto Falls IMCA Sport Mod driver, Eric “Chummy” Arneson picked up his third feature win of the season Saturday night at Thunderhill. With the win Arneson pulled to a 1 point lead ahead of New Franken’s Brad Lautenbach. Despite not winning a feature last season Arneson was a model of consistency and took home the Sport Mod title and until this season had never won a feature at the Hill.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks will see a first time champion as no drivers in the field have ever won a title. With 6 nights in the books the battle for the title is still up for grabs. Denmark’s Tom Brumlic picked up a division high third feature win of the season. Despite winning half of the features run, he only holds a 1 point edge over two time feature winner Brandon Peterson of Sturgeon Bay. Algoma’s Marcus Moede is the only other driver to win a feature this season, he currently sits tied for third with Sturgeon Bay’s C.J. Weckler 7 marks back.

Noticeably absent in the IMCA Stock Cars was Kewaunee’s Luke Lemmens. Lemmens was the 2010 IMCA Hobby Stock champion at the Hill and is in his first year in the Stock Cars. Despite being a rookie Lemmens came into the weekend 5th in points with 2 feature wins and was ranked 8th in the IMCA National Rookie standings.

Lemmens was involved in a hard wreck Friday night at Luxemburg Speedway when his racer suffered a broken steering box , having no steering it sent his car driver side first into a pack of cars racing by on the front stretch. Green Bay’s Rick Dix and Algoma’s Dave Bouche would get collected in the wreck. Lemmens car would suffer enough damage that he wasn’t able to race the next night. Its still uncertain when the #00 machine will return to action. The Bouche crew would work till 3 A.M. Saturday morning to put the #21 car back together from the wreck and he would come home with an 8th place finish Saturday night.

THUNDERHILL TOPLESS WINNERS, THE LAND SHARK CRASH VIDEO, FORMER CHAMP RETURNS AND UPDATE ON NICK LEMIEUX

By Edward Anschutz

Mark it in the record books as Thunderhill featured its first ever “Topless Night” in the IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Northern Sport Mods. The winners were Dan Ratajczak in the Modifieds and second year driver Tyler Hackett in the Sport Mods. Ratajczak sits third all time in the Modifieds with 20 feature wins. Each driver took home extra cash for their respective wins.

In the newly added Spectator Eliminator, the crowd was treated to the legendary “Land Shark” Jeff Schroeder making his debut at Thunderhill. The “Land Shark” synonymous with North Eastern Wisconsin race tracks gave the Thunderhill fans a white knuckle moment smashing head on into the front stretch wall after the checkers. Schroeder would walk away unscathed but his all original 1969 Chevrolet Impala with only 80,000 miles was destroyed. Schroeder who calls Bonduel home had driven the car to track and had to call a family member to come pick him up.

Schroeder said he will return with his street legal 1935 Chevrolet 3 window coupe, powered by a blown 355 small block with dual carburetors and a 4 speed Muncie. If you want to take on the Land Shark go to the track website for the sign up sheet and rules. The winner receives a minimum cash prize of $75.

We have video footage of Schroeder’s crash on the Thunderhill Facebook page, www.facebook.com/thunderhillraceway Special thanks to Pain Racing for the video.

Jamie Suchocki and Mike Pierrard returned to the Hill for the first time in 2011. Pierrard a former champion in the Street Stocks and IMCA Stock Cars was relocated to Georgia last June by his employer.

Suchocki a former feature winner in the IMCA Stock Cars is now calling Iowa home as his wife Heather and their children relocated to Hawkeye country in early spring for her job. Jamie’s return didn’t go as planned as he suffered a flat tire during the feature. Pierrard and Suchocki hope to be back in Wisconsin and race a few more times before the season ends.

Sturgeon Bay’s Nick LeMieux took a hard tumble midway through the Feisty Four feature. LeMieux’s #36 clipped the wall coming out of turn four, sending his car into a barrel roll down the front stretch coming to a halt landing on the passenger side under the flagman. Safety crews went to work and safely removed a sore and shaken LeMieux from his wrecked racer. He was then put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. While being loaded in the ambulance, LeMieux gave a thumbs up to the crowd, he then received a huge round of applause from the fans.

LeMieux suffered a severe concussion and a sprained lumbar (lower spine). He is at home recovering from the vicious crash. With the injury he will not be able to race any more this season. All of us at Thunderhill are wishing Nick a speedy recovery.

Drivers will be removing their roof and sail panels, the night will be brought to you by Little Hoppers Recycling. Time permitting we will have driver introductions for the Modifieds.

“Were very excited to give fans a different perspective of their favorite Modified or Sport Mod drivers.” Stated Woody. “This idea has been kicked around for a few years and it only made sense to do it the night after Luxemburg Speedway has their topless race, so drivers only have to take their roofs off once during the season.”

Weekly Notes:

Special thanks to all drivers and crews for their extra work on the track so we could go racing Saturday night. Mother nature really threw the track a curve ball so to speak. Also thank you to all the employees for their hard work and dedication coming to the track as early as 7am to start prep on the track.

Noticeably absent Saturday night was former Street Stock and Bomber champion Aaron “The Hammer” Thornton. The driver out of Maplewood just picked up his first feature win of the season on June 4 in the Street Stocks. But when the night of June 11started the 95 car was no where in sight. Thornton was rushed to the hospital Saturday afternoon with what doctors believe to be a heart attack. We wish “The Hammer” a speedy recover from everyone at Thunderhill.

Kewaunee’s Luke Lemmens and Luxemburg’s James Iverson competed in the Bellin Run Saturday morning in Green Bay. Iverson would go onto his best finish to date in the IMCA Sport Mods leading most of the feature and coming home second to defending champion Eric Arneson.
