Dart Nabs Second Feature Win at Thunderhill

mvc-009f

by Chris Budzban

May 30, 2009; Sturgeon Bay, WI – Although he won the IMCA modified points title for the sixth time in 2008, Algoma’s Todd Dart did not have a single feature win on the season. It didn’t take him long to grab his first feature win of 2009, and he notched his second feature win tonight at Prestige Yacht Coatings Thunderhill Raceway.

Dart followed early race leader Eric Van Iten on the bottom of the race track for several laps, then turned on the jets and headed up to the middle groove. He was able to make the pass with 4 laps to go and hang on for the win. Van Iten would take second, Jeremy Jacobs third, Mike Wedelstadt fourth and Tim Czarneski fifth.

Brussels’ Shawn Havel also captured his second feature win of the season at Thunderhill in the IMCA stock car division. Havel grabbed the lead early and never relinquished, fending off an early challenge from division rookie Dave DeGrave to take the checkers. DeGrave finished second, Pat Davister third, Dave Bouche fourth and Bret Koehler fifth.

The IMCA hobby stocks, dubbed the “wild things,” excited the crowd with early three and four wide action up front. Frank Paul took command of the race with last week’s winner Jarred VanLaanen and Luke Lemmens nipping at his heels. A caution set up a green-white-checker finish, with Paul edging VanLaanen at the line for the win. Lemmens finished third, Chad Kaminski fourth and a spinning Aaron Zellner fifth.

Second year IMCA northern sport mod driver JJ Andersen bested Cory Cochart to win his first career feature in the division. Cochart tried relentlessly to pass Andersen on the inside, but to no avail. Cochart settled for second, Bernie Reinhardt third, Jesse Kroll fourth and Brad Lautenbach fifth.

Seymour’s Jeremy Wiitala ended his tough luck by bringing home the win in the NEW super stock division. Ryan Mueller led the majority of the race, when with 2 laps to go he was sandwiched by Wiitala on the outside and John Sternard on the inside. Wiitala was able to make the pass, taking the win. Mueller took second, Sternard third, Joe Schwister fourth and David Hoerning fifth.

Suamico’s Tyler DeBouche captured the 4 cylinder win for the second week in a row. Kasey Gross was the runner up, also the second week in a row he’s finished there.

The IMCA modifieds held another “Dash for the Cash” special, with Mike Wedelstadt coming out victorious.

Next week The Big Dawg 97.7 will sponsor the racing action. Racing gets underway at 6pm on Saturday evening with IMCA modifieds, stock cars, hobby stocks, northern sport mods, NEW super stocks and 4 cylinders. For more information, visit www.racethunderhill.com or call (920) 743-7052.

by Chris Budzban

May 23, 2009; Sturgeon Bay, WI – New Franken’s Shawn Kilgore made the move to the inside of Kevin Sternard on the final lap to win he IMCA modified feature at Prestige Yacht Coatings Thunderhill Raceway. Kilgore also took home the win on Friday night at Luxemburg Speedway.

In other action, Chargin’ Charlie Kroll dominated the IMCA stock car feature while Jarred VanLaanen led every lap of the IMCA hobby stock feature event.

Sternard took off from his front row starting spot and built up a sizable lead, but that would be wiped out by a caution for debris on the track. With the grid reset, Kilgore shot up to 2nd past Billy LeMieux and set his sights on Sternard. With 2 laps to go, Kilgore started to make the move on the inside and took the lead with 1 lap remaining, holding off Sternard for his 2nd feature win on the weekend. LeMieux finished third, Julie Wedelstadt fourth and Todd Dart fifth.

Kroll started about four rows back in the pack, but it did not take him long to find the lead. He powered past John Anschutz and Mike Pierrard and never looked back, taking home his 1st feature win of the season. Dave Bouche came in second, followed by Von Eytcheson, Pierrard and Jamie Suchocki.

VanLaanen started on the outside pole of the IMCA hobby stock feature and led every lap en route to his 1st feature win at Thunderhill, and 2nd feature win overall. Frank Paul started dead last in the field and took second, followed by Robert Waechter Jr., Roger LaViolette and Brandon Peterson.

Kewaunee’s Eugene Gregorich came out victorious in the IMCA northern sport mod feature. Gregorich did battle with Jesse Kroll for the top spot throughout the race, and held off the rest of the pack to pick up the win. A frenzy of a finish occurred after Bernie Reinhardt struck an infield tire coming to the checkers, scattering the field. Reinhardt held on to take second, Troy Jerovetz third, Cory Cochart fourth and Kroll fifth.

The tough luck continued for Jeremy Wiitala in the NEW super stock division. For the second week in a row he was passed on the final lap of the feature event, this time by Todd Everard. Wiitala again took runner-up honors, followed by Ryan Mueller, John Sternard and Logan Rhode.

Green Bay’s Tyler DeBouche captured the 4 cylinder feature win. Kasey Gross and Kipp Burlo finished second and third, respectively.

In some extra curricular racing, Todd Dart picked up an extra $300 in a special “Dash for the Cash” race by the IMCA modified drivers.

May 16, 2009; Sturgeon Bay, WI – Algoma’s Todd Dart took the lead early and held off another former champion Jeremy Jacobs on his way to the IMCA modified feature win at Prestige Yacht Coatings Thunderhill Raceway. Also, Ellisville’s Robert Waechter Jr. picked up his 1st career IMCA hobby stock feature win.

Sturgeon Bay’s Kevin Sternard led the early stages of the IMCA modified feature, until a spin by Dan Ratajczak bunched the field. Dart and Jacobs would both attempt to make the pass on Sternard, with Dart down low and Jacobs up high. Dart was able to get the better run and hugged the tires, picking up the feature win. Jacobs finished second, Shawn Kilgore third, Sternard fourth and last week’s winner Mike Wedelstadt fifth.

In the IMCA stock car division, Brussels’ Shawn Havel took advantage of his front row starting position, riding comfortably to his 1st feature win on the season. Luxemburg’s Pat Davister and Two Rivers’ Bret Koehler battled to the checkers for second, with Davister coming out ahead. Troy Muench and Dave Bouche rounded out the top five.

In the IMCA hobby stocks, Waechter rode the outside line and dominated the feature event. He was followed to the checkers by Chad Kaminski, Frank Paul, Brandon Peterson and Marcus Moede.

Kewaunee’s Cory Cochart would lead most of the IMCA northern sport mod feature, when with 1 lap to go, smoke started to barrel out of the car. Last year’s track champion Jeff Vlies took to the outside of Cochart, but Cochart had just enough left in the car to beat him to the line for the win by inches. Bernie Reinhardt followed in third, Jeff DuBois fourth and Brad Lautenbach fifth.

Defending track champion John Sternard caught early leader Jeremy Wiitala with a few laps remaining, and was able to beat him to the checkers in a clean side-by-side battle in the NEW super stock division. Following Sternard and Wiitala were Jimmy Anderson, Geno Sternard and Logan Rhode.

Three time 4 cylinder champion Tony Everard inherited the lead from Tyler DeBouche and picked up his 2nd straight victory.

Wedelstadt, Snellenberger Win Opener at Thunderhill

Mike Wedelstadt

By Edward J. Anschutz Jr.

May 9, 2009; Sturgeon Bay, WI – Fremont’s Mike Wedelstadt took the lead away from Green Bay’s Art Siefert and never looked back cruising to the IMCA modified victory. In the IMCA stock cars, Pulaski’s Rod Snellenberger was able to fend of a late race charge from John Heinz and win from the pole at Thunderhill.

In the IMCA modifieds, Denmark’s Tim Czarneski set the pace for the first 6 laps of the feature, until Art Seifert would use the top side to track down Czarneski. The two car battle quickly became a three car battle when Mike Wedelstadt would join in the fight for the lead. The trio went 3-wide up front with Siefert making the pass and getting the lead on lap 7. Wedelstadt would clear Czarneski and a lap later and reel in Siefert, then making the pass down low for the lead. Once out front Wedelstadt would pull away and collect the checkers. Jay Matthias would make a late surge to take second, Siefert third, Kyle Kudick fourth and Julie Wedelstadt would round out the top five.

Rod Snellenberger, former track champion in the stock cars at Thunderhill would draw the pole for the WDOR Feature. When the green flew, Snellenberger would pull away early, but a caution would wipe the lead away. On the restart, Von Eytcheson would pull to the back bumper of Snellenberger, but just couldn’t get enough traction to make the pass. A series of cautions would again stack the field. Once Snellenberger would take off on the restarts, it looked to be clear sailing as a fierce battle ensued behind the leader. Eytcheson, Charlie Kroll, Troy Muench, Larry Karcz, Mike Pierrard and John Heinz waged battle for the second position. Heinz would muscle his way past competitors into the second spot and then he set his sights on Snellenberger. With only 2 laps remaining Heinz would catch the leader, charging for the white flag, the two would make heavy contact, sending Snellenberger into a tractor tire out of turn four. Snellenberger’s car would going flying through the air with the front tires off the ground, but somehow he was able to maintain the lead and would go on to take checkers, handing him his 3rd IMCA point feature win of the season. Heinz would settle for second, Muench third, Pierrard fourth and Dave Bouche fifth.

Aaron Holiday would set the pace early in the IMCA northern sport mod Feature, leading until lap four, that’s when Johnny Whitmann would make the pass and take lead. Whitmann would survive a late race caution and hold off the current state point leader Tim Jorgenson. Whittmann would pick up the win, his first ever at Thunderhill. Jorgenson would place second, third for Holiday, Eric Arneson fourth and defending champion Jeff Vlies would place fifth

The IMCA hobby stocks would live up to the nickname as the “wild things” for their feature event. Aaron Zellner would set the pace, but would quickly be challenged by Jarred VanLaanen and Robert Waechter Jr. The trio would be 3-wide as they entered the front stretch, catching the lap car of Shawn LeMieux on lap 8. Contact was made causing LeMieux to get sideways and up on two wheels. VanLaanen would end up getting tagged and sliding through the infield hitting a tractor tire, sending his car through air and at the same time Waechter, who had taken the lead on that lap, went spinning through the infield. The caution would fly for debris on the track. VanLaanen would take his machine pit side for repairs and would finish near the tail of the field. When the raced resumed, Waechter looked to be well on his way to his first career feature win in the hobbys. That’s when Frank Paul began to reel in the leader as the white flag flew. Waechter had a car length lead but coming out of turn two, but he would get caught behind a slower car, and Paul would sneak by on the low groove making a last lap pass for the win. Waechter would take a close second followed by Tom Brumlic third, Brandon Peterson fourth and Chad Kaminski rounded out the top five.

Todd Everard would take the lead from the pole and never look back, winning the street stock feature. Jeremy Wiitala would place second, defending Champion John Sternard third, Ryan Mueller fourth and Jimmy Anderson fifth.

Multi time and defending track Champion in the Feisty 4’s Tony Everard would take the lead away from Jeremy DuBois on lap 3. With two laps remaining, Jason Cornelius would make contact with a barrier tire out of turn four causing car to flip and barrel roll several times, the car would to a rest on its side. Cornelius would emerge unscathed, and stood up proudly upon his car with his arms raised in the air to the crowd’s delight. The race would be called due to curfew, handing the win to Tony Everard, second to DuBois, Kasey Gross third, Nick Everard fourth and Kipp Burlo placing fifth.

Next week’s races are sponsored by Carlsville Engineering. Racing gets underway at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening. The track’s website is www.racethunderhill.com. For more information, call (920) 743-7052.
