McDermid Tops Mods; Two in a Row for Wiitala & Reinhardt at Thunderhill

By Chris Budzban

May 31, 2008; Sturgeon Bay, WI – Julie McDermid of Oconto Falls passed Shawn Kilgore after a late restart to capture the IMCA modified feature at the Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway. Jeremy Wiitala and Bernie Reinhardt each won their second consecutive features in the street stock and IMCA northern sport mod divisions, respectively.

Kilgore took a commanding lead from his front row starting spot in the modified feature, followed by James Tebon and McDermid. McDermid would get by Tebon, but Kilgore would hold his lead by a large distance. A late caution erased Kilgore’s lead and allowed McDermid to slide underneath for the lead and the win. Todd Dart charged hard to second, followed by Kilgore, Randy LeMieux and Billy LeMieux.

Green Bay’s Darren Otto led wire to wire in the IMCA stock car divison, boasting a huge lead early and coasting to victory. The feature went green to checker with all twenty cars finishing the race. Another good run netted second for Pat Davister, third to Shawn Havel, fourth to Tyler Smith and fifth to Tony Bouche.

Aaron Zellner took charge in the IMCA hobby stocks, with Frank Paul and Marcus Moede in hot pursuit. Trouble for both Moede and Jeff Lautenbach bunched up the field, with Dave DeGrave being the beneficiary. DeGrave and Paul went three wide with Zellner for the lead with DeGrave taking the lead and capturing the victory. He was followed by last week’s winner Brandon Peterson, Paul, CJ Weckler and Jarred VanLaanen.

Sturgeon Bay’s Bernie Reinhardt made the move on the outside of Jesse Kroll to win his second consecutive IMCA northern sport mod feature. Aaron Holiday would give chase but could not reel in Reinhardt. Following Holiday were Jeff DuBois, Keith Kickbusch and Jeff Vlies.

Jeremy Wiitala also made it two in a row as he captured the win in the street stocks. An early spin by Brian Weslow collected a bunch of cars, allowing the point leaders to jump to the front. Dennis Weidner led with three laps to go, but Wiitala took to the outside to make the pass for the win. John Sternard got the runner up spot, followed by Todd Everard, Weidner and James Iverson.

Tony Everard passed Kenny Malcore en route to victory in the caution filled 4 cylinder feature.

Next week is sponsored by Palmer Johnson of Sturgeon Bay. IMCA modified drivers will be introduced before their feature event. Racing gets underway at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening. The track’s website is www.racethunderhill.com. For more information, call (920) 743-7052.

Wedelstadt Dominates at Thunderhill

By Chris Budzban

May 24, 2008; Sturgeon Bay, WI – Fremont’s Mike Wedelstadt charged through the field of IMCA modifieds in his first appearance of the year and took home a commanding win at the Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway.

Jay Matthias was the early race leader in the IMCA modifieds, with Shawn Kilgore and James Tebon racing side by side for second. Wedelstadt split Kilgore and Tebon through turn four, and set his sights on Matthias. He made the pass down low, and took off with a half a lap lead on the rest of the field. Matthias settled for second, Billy LeMieux, Kilgore and Tebon followed.

Forestville’s Charlie Kroll picked up his second IMCA stock car feature win of the weekend, also posting a win at Luxemburg. Darren Otto and Pat Davister started on the front row, and battled side by side the entire race until there were three laps to go. Kroll made room under Otto, and made the three wide pass for the lead and the win. Otto picked up second, followed by Davister, last week’s winner Von Eytcheson and Cory Cochart.

Frank Paul took early command of the IMCA hobby stock feature, with Brandon Peterson and Dave DeGrave battling behind. DeGrave and Peterson sandwiched Paul coming into turn three, and Peterson came out with the lead on the bottom groove. DeGrave tried the high line to pass Peterson, but to no avail. Chad Kaminski got under DeGrave for second, and Peterson drove away with the win. Jason LaViolette was fourth, and Paul ended up fifth. James Zellner claimed the engine of LaViolette, and the claim was accepted.

IMCA northern sport mod rookie Jesse Kroll led most of the feature, but slid up the track allowing fellow rookie Bernie Reinhardt to take the lead underneath. Opening night winner Aaron Holiday would give chase on the outside line, but Reinhardt would hold him off for his first career sport mod feature win. Kroll finished third, but was later disqualified for failing to enter the claim area. Last week’s winner Jeff Vlies was awarded third and Jeff DuBois fourth.

Seymour’s Jeremy Wiitala led wire to wire in the street stock division for his first feature win of the season. John Sternard and David Hoerning battled each other for the third week in a row, with Sternard taking second and Hoerning third. Aaron Thornton made his return to Thunderhill with a fourth place finish and last week’s winner Todd Everard rounded out the top five.

A tangle between race leader Jody Cornelius and Tony Everard gave the lead to Jason Cornelius in the 4 cylinders. Jason Cornelius went on to win, followed by Rick Lemmens, Everard, Jeremy DuBois and Kipp Burlo.

Next week is sponsored by Econo Foods of Sturgeon Bay. Racing gets underway at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening. The track’s website is www.racethunderhill.com. For more information, call (920) 743-7052.

1st Career Modified Win for Czarneski at Thunderhill

By Chris Budzban

May 17, 2008; Sturgeon Bay, WI – One night after Tim Czarneski rolled his IMCA modified, he took home the checkers at Thunderhill in his backup car. Jeff Vlies also took home his first career IMCA northern sport mod feature win.

James Tebon had the lead early on, but Czarneski took to the high side and reeled him in at the halfway point. Czarneski built up a sizable lead on the field running the top line, and cruised to his first career IMCA modified feature win. Todd Dart took advantage of contact between Kevin Sternard and Tebon to sneak into second. Dart was followed by Sternard, Jeremy Jacobs and Tebon at the line.

Von Eytcheson looked very strong taking home his first IMCA stock car feature of the year. He took the lead from Mike Pierrard early and never looked back. Matt Junio and Greg Gretz charged through the field to second and third, respectively, followed by Charlie Kroll and last week’s winner Dave Bouche.

Dave DeGrave’s streak of four feature wins in a row came to an end, as a flat tire put him several laps down early in the IMCA hobby stocks. Chad Kaminski would take charge early, but last year’s Fall Classic winner Marcus Moede would be right on his tail. Moede took the inside line under Kaminski and survived a late race caution to take the victory. Kaminski followed in second, Jarred VanLaanen, Jeff Lautenbach and Roger LaViolette rounded out the top five.

Last year’s IMCA hobby stock track champion Keith Kickbusch led every lap up until there were two to go, when Jeff Vlies wrestled the lead away, picking up his first career IMCA northern sport mod feature win. Kickbusch took second, Marcus Yarie, Eric Arneson and Tim Jorgenson followed.

Todd Everard drove past early race leader Jeremy Wiitala to earn the victory in the street stocks. Last week’s winner John Sternard had another great run taking second and Harley Simon took third. Wiitala settled for fourth and David Hoerning took fifth.

Two-time defending track champion Tony Everard fought off a late race battle with Jason Cornelius to take the win in the 4 cylinders.

LEMIEUX, BOUCHE, HOLIDAY, DEGRAVE AND STERNARD VICTORIOUS AT THUNDERHILL!

By Chris Budzban

May 10, 2008; Sturgeon Bay, WI – John Sternard and Aaron Holiday took home their first career feature wins in the street stock and IMCA northern sport mod divisions respectively on opening night at the Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway.

Frog Station’s Dan Ratajczak took command early in the IMCA modified feature event, and built up a sizable lead on the rest of a field. Billy LeMieux charged hard on the inside line with four laps to go to overtake the lead. LeMieux took home the win, followed by Ratajczak, Tim Van De Hei, Todd Dart and Jeremy Jacobs.

Brussels’ Troy Muench and Algoma’s Dave Bouche battled early in the IMCA stock car feature, with Greg Gretz and Shawn Havel on their heels. Bouche built up a nice lead when the caution flag flew for Cory Cochart and Matt Junio. Another caution flag flew with three laps to go, but Bouche hung on for the victory. Gretz settled for second, followed by Havel and Todd Polster who came through the consy. Muench was fifth and Scott Pagels took sixth.

Bernie Reinhardt led the early stages of the IMCA northern sport mod feature, but was quickly challenged by 2007 track champion Jeff DuBois. DuBois took the lead, and Reinhardt spun into the infield on lap 4. Aaron Holiday chopped away at DuBois’ lead in the late stages, and a late caution set up a great finish. Holiday got under DuBois to take his first career feature win. DuBois took second, Jeff Vlies, Brad Lautenbach, Jerry Kroll and Keith Kickbusch followed.

Dave DeGrave of Luxemburg once again put on another dominant performance in the IMCA hobby stock division. DeGrave took the lead from Jarred VanLaanen early on and weaved his way through lapped traffic to take home the victory. Brandon Peterson made his way up to a second place finish, followed by Jason LaViolette, Roger LaViolette and VanLaanen. DeGrave is now three for three in feature events this season at Luxemburg and Sturgeon Bay.

Hometown driver John Sternard picked up his first career win in the street stock division. Both he and David Hoerning were side by side racing through lapped traffic until the end. Sternard had the inside line and Hoerning was boxed in coming to the checkers, allowing Sternard to pick up the victory. Hoerning was the runner up, Todd Everard, Harley Simon and Jimmy Anderson rounded out the top five.

The 4 cylinder feature did not run due to rain and curfew.
