By Chris Budzban

September 20, 2008; Sturgeon Bay, WI – Oconto Falls’ Julie McDermid took home the top prize in the IMCA modified division at the Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway’s Fall Classic special.

Denmark’s Tim Czarneski set the pace early on, hugging the bottom groove around the slick race track. McDermid shot into second, then hopped up to the outside to try and make the pass around Czarneski. Shawn Kilgore also got into the mix, as he tried to thread the needle between the two. They would run 3-wide around the track for 5 laps, with Kilgore slicing through into the top spot; however a caution flag flew just as Kilgore completed his move, handing the lead to McDermid. Once she got on the bottom, McDermid was able to pull away from the bunch, and held off a late charge by Mike Wedelstadt to pick up the win. Wedelstadt finished second, followed by Todd Dart, Kilgore and MJ Hintz.

Brussels’ Troy Muench continued his recent string of victories in the IMCA stock car division, as he held off 2008 track champion Matt Junio for the feature win. Muench took the lead early from Tony Bouche, and held the lead throughout the event. The only caution in the race bunched up the field with 2 laps to go, but Muench broke away from the pack again to take the victory. Junio finished second, followed by Jeremy Christians, Dave Bouche and Shawn Havel.

Weekly IMCA modified driver Brett Wenzel took off from his front row starting spot to capture the feature win in the visiting grand national division. Wenzel took the lead on the outside and ran the high line the entire race to the checkers. Following him at the line were Brad Lubach, Dan Schumacher, Nick Schumacher and Justin Danes.

Another wild and wacky feature event in the IMCA hobby stocks took place, with Luxemburg’s Frank Paul besting Chad Kaminski to bring home the win. Marcus Moede may have had the most eventful night, as he took two trips down pit lane and had to have corner workers extinguish fires from underneath his car. In the end, he still managed a fourth place finish. Kaminski would take second, Jarred VanLaanen third and Tom Brumlic fifth.

2008 IMCA northern sport mod champion Jeff Vlies drew the pole for the feature, and led every lap en route to the feature win. Bernie Reinhardt ended up second, Eugene Gregorich third, Brad Lautenbach fourth and Aaron Holiday fifth.

Brillion’s Ryan Brandes picked up another feature win in the street stock division. He was able to make the outside pass stick on David Hoerning and fended off track champion John Sternard for the win. Sternard finished second, Hoerning third, Todd Everard fourth and James Iverson fifth.

Three time track champion Tony Everard got by Jody Cornelius on the inside to bring home the feature win in the 4 cylinders.

The 2008 season has come to a close for the Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway. The staff would like to thank all the drivers, fans and sponsors for a great season of racing.

LeMieux Jr. Wins 2nd Straight IMCA Mod Feature

By Chris Budzban

August 30, 2008; Sturgeon Bay, WI – Sturgeon Bay’s Randy LeMieux Jr. captured his second straight IMCA modified feature win at the Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway.

LeMieux Jr., Dan Ratajczak, Kyle Kudick and Billy LeMieux quickly separated themselves from the rest of the field in the IMCA modified feature, but Billy LeMieux’s car went up in smoke, dropping him out of the race. Ratajczak and Kudick would battle for second, until Ratajczak sailed off of turn 4, ending his night as well. LeMieux Jr. went on to win uncontested, followed by Kudick, Todd Dart, Kevin Sternard and Jay Matthias.

With his 3rd place finish, Dart captured his unprecedented 6th track championship in the IMCA modified division at Thunderhill.

A big wreck marred the opening of the IMCA stock car feature, collecting John Anschutz, Brian Anschutz, Rick Dix and most notably the points leader Matt Junio. Crew members worked feverishly to get Junio back onto the track, and he rejoined the field a few laps down. Mike Wietor was able to capture the lead and hold off pressure from Scott Pagels for the victory. Pagels settled for second, Troy Muench third, Todd Polster fourth and Dave Bouche fifth.

Junio would be scored 16th, which was just enough to hang on for his 2nd straight IMCA stock car division championship.

Luxemburg’s Dave DeGrave took matters into his own hands, dominating the IMCA hobby stock feature and bringing home his 1st career track title at Thunderhill. A few of DeGrave’s competitors for the title ran into some bad luck, as Frank Paul and Marcus Moede both ended their nights on the hook. Jarred VanLaanen had a solid second place finish, followed by James Bosman, Luke Lemmens and Terry Terrien.

DeGrave now has 2 track titles in the IMCA hobby stocks, as he also won the championship Friday night at Luxemburg Speedway.

New Franken’s Brad Lautenbach picked up his 2nd feature win of the weekend in the IMCA northern sport mods, also winning at Luxemburg. Lautenbach knew he needed to win to have a chance at winning the points, but Jeff Vlies’ fifth place finish was good enough to secure the track title. Cory Cochart finished second, Bernie Reinhardt third, Jesse Kroll fourth and Vlies fifth.

Vlies’ track championship is the 1st of his career in any division. He is a veteran of the IMCA stock cars, and this was his 1st season in the IMCA northern sport mods.

Green Bay’s Todd Everard caught early leader Kevin Charles to bring home the street stock feature win. All eyes were on the middle of the field, as points leader John Sternard and Jeremy Wiitala did battle. Charles settled in for a second place finish, followed by Dennis Weidner, James Iverson and Ryan Brandes.

Sternard would finish sixth, ensuring him of his 1st career track championship in the street stocks.

Green Bay’s Tyler DeBouche captured another feature win in the 4 cylinder division. DeBouche and points leader Tony Everard were side by side on the final lap, but a caution flag flew, giving the win to DeBouche.

Everard’s second place finish on the night gave him his 3rd straight championship in the 4 cylinder division.

Next week there will be no racing at the Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway. Racing will resume on Friday & Saturday, September 19 and 20 for the annual Fall Classic special. Brussels’ Troy Muench took back to back wins in the IMCA stock cars, also picking up the feature win Friday night at Luxemburg.

McDermid Cashes In at Thunderhill’s Fair Night Special

By Chris Budzban

August 6, 2008; Sturgeon Bay, WI – Oconto Falls’ Julie McDermid beat out Seymour’s Brian Mullen, taking home the $1,000 prize in the IMCA modified division at the Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway’s fair night special. Jamie Suchocki notched his first career feature win in the IMCA stock cars.

The night didn’t start out as planned, as Mother Nature has thrown the track quite a few curveballs all season long, and this night being no different. Thunderhill Raceway would like to thank all the track crew, the drivers and the fans for getting a very important night of racing in tonight.

Denmark’s Tim Czarneski was looking to take back to back feature wins in the modifieds, but McDermid had other intentions. McDermid powered down low on her way to second, then drove underneath Czarneski to take the lead. A late surge from Brian Mullen set up a close finish, but McDermid came out on top. Mullen settled for second, Billy LeMieux third, Czarneski fourth and Mike Wedelstadt fifth.

Forestville’s Jamie Suchocki had his hands full with some heavy competition behind him, but he shrugged off the pressure and took home his first career feature win. Suchocki survived a heated battle with multi-feature winner Charlie Kroll on several occasions, and was able to cruise onto a victory. Rod Snellenberger finished third, Darren Otto fourth and Mike Wietor fifth.

The wild and crazy finishes in the IMCA hobby stock division of late added a new chapter with tonight’s finish. State points leader Dave DeGrave took the lead away from Brian Belleau with 5 laps remaining, but Belleau took DeGrave around and received the black flag for his efforts. DeGrave somehow held on, but Jarred VanLaanen shot past him and into the lead. VanLaanen felt the pressure from Derek Moede with a few laps remaining, but he was up to the challenge taking home his first feature win of the season. Derek Moede took second, followed by DeGrave, Brandon Peterson and Marcus Moede.

Algoma’s Jesse Kroll set the pace early in the IMCA northern sport mod division, but lost control of his car coming out of the corner, surrendering multiple positions. Last week’s winner Travis Cain would inherit the lead, and was able to hold off initial pressure from Charlie Kroll and Tim Jorgenson. Jorgenson challenged late for the lead, but Cain kept holding him off until the final turn, as Jorgenson was able to get to the inside and narrowly beat out Cain for the win. Charlie Kroll followed in third, Eric Arneson fourth and Bernie Reinhardt fifth.

Green Bay’s Tyler DeBauche picked up his second feature win of the season in the 4 cylinder division, besting Gleason’s Kasey Gross.

There is no racing this Saturday night, racing will resume next Saturday, August 16. The sponsor for the night will be Witt Peninsula Ford. For more information, visit the website at www.racethunderhill.com or call (920) 743-7052.

Czarneski Captures Second IMCA Modified Main at Thunderhill

By Chris Budzban

August 2, 2008; Sturgeon Bay, WI – Denmark’s Tim Czarneski held off New Franken’s Shawn Kilgore to pick up his second feature win of the season in the IMCA modifieds at the Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway. Algoma’s Dave Bouche also found himself back in victory lane for the second time in the IMCA stock car division.

Czarneski powered his way on the top line early on in the race, building a sizable lead on the rest of the competition. Kevin Sternard and Shawn Kilgore battled for second, with Kilgore getting the advantage on the inside line. Kilgore would give chase, but Czarneski’s lead was too wide. A spin by Duwayne Mertens on the last lap ended the race, giving Czarneski the win. Kilgore would follow in second, Julie McDermid third, Sternard fourth and Mike Wedelstadt fifth.

The IMCA stock cars got off to another rocky start, with 3 caution flags before any laps were completed. Sturgeon Bay’s Don Aregoni would take the early lead, with Dave Bouche hot on his tail. Bouche tucked his car down by the tires and was able to clear Aregoni for the lead. Charlie Kroll made a charge on the outside of Bouche, but a caution flag flew for a spin by Scott Pagels. Bouche would restart in the lead with Von Eytcheson charging hard on his outside. Eytcheson held the lead for a few laps, but Bouche was able to roar back on the inside line and take the checkers. Eytcheson settled for second, followed by Charlie Kroll, Todd Polster and Ben Kroll.

The IMCA hobby stocks brought the fans another exciting finish. Luxemburg’s Frank Paul took the early lead on the outside, with Jarred VanLaanen challenging on the low line. Paul and VanLaanen would do battle for much of the race, but the lapped car of Cody LaViolette would come into play. Paul slowed for LaViolette and VanLaanen tried to take the lead, but VanLaanen made contact with LaViolette, bringing out a caution. VanLaanen was able to keep his machine rolling, so he would restart second with Dave DeGrave to his outside. Paul held off both drivers on the last corner, and slid across the line in first. VanLaanen lost control of his car, allowing Dave DeGrave and Brandon Peterson to sneak past for second and third, respectively. Luke Lemmens saved the day for VanLaanen, as he pushed VanLaanen across the line for fourth, giving Lemmens fifth.

Oconto’s Travis Cain made a rare appearance at Thunderhill, but made it pay off in a big way, picking up the feature win in the IMCA northern sport mod division. Cain passed 4-time feature winner Bernie Reinhardt on the outside and was able to cruise to victory. Reinhardt took second, Brad Lautenbach third, Jesse Kroll fourth and Aaron Holiday fifth.

The street stocks started with a big wreck caused by contact between Jacob Grovogel and Jimmy Anderson, sending several drivers down pit lane very early. Green Bay’s Todd Everard would be the beneficiary, as he would restart the race on the front row. Everard grabbed the lead with Jeremy Wiitala giving chase. Wiitala closed in on Everard, but pushed coming out of turn four with a few laps to go, giving Everard enough of a lead to bring home the victory. John Sternard, Gene Sternard and Thom Terrien rounded out the top 5.

Oneida’s Jason Cornelius bested Tony Everard, earning a clean sweep of the 4 cylinder division.

Next week Saturday there will be no racing at the Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway due to the Door County Fair. This Wednesday night, August 6 will be an IMCA special event sponsored by Forest County Potawatomi with a 6:30 p.m. start time. Points will be for national and state, but no track points. All weekly divisions will be running with the exception of the street stocks. For more information, visit the website at www.racethunderhill.com or call (920) 743-7052.
